CRYPTOGENIC HEADACHE AND CRYPTOGENIC BRAIN ATROPHY

Abstract
Fifty three patients who complained of headache without any hitherto known causes, from the beggining to September of 1971 at the Neurology Department of the National Medical Center, were investigated.
Age of onset was most commonly between 20 to 40¢¥ but it was seen in the 2nd decade also. Male female ratio was 1 : 1. Duration of the headache was mostly from 10 days to 5 years and most commonly 1-2 years. Two cases were over 5 years.
Common associated symptoms were dizziness, nausea and insomnia etc.
Among 26 EEG, 11 were moderately abnormal, & slightly abnormal, 1 severely abnormal and 9 were normal. PEG was taken in 6 cases and all showed brain atrophy, especially dilatation of the ventricles. Other laboratory finding were not relevant to the headache.
Medications with analgesics, sedatives, tranquilizers, vitamins etc. showed no marked improvement.
It was considered that one or more certain unknown pathological systemic or neurogenic process may bring headache, some of which causing degeneration of the brain with brain atrophy.
